The goal of Code Enforcement is to provide consistent, fair, and respectful enforcement of the Vinton Town Code and the Vinton Zoning Ordinance.


CODE VIOLATIONS

The Town of Vinton pursues violations of the Code of the Town of Vinton and the Vinton Zoning Ordinance. Below we have provided a violation menu that will link you to some information on the various types of possible violations. Please read this information to determine whether or not something you have seen is a violation of the Town's ordinance. To report a possible violation, or with questions on violations, please contact the Town of Vinton Planning and Zoning Department at 540-983-0605 or send an email* to: kturman@vintonva.gov.

*If you choose to report a violation by email, please include the following information:

  • Location of the violation you are reporting--be as specific as possible.
  • Property owner's name (if known) where violation is located.
  • Detailed description of the violation.
  • Your name and phone number so you can be contacted if further information is needed.

ACCUMULATION OF DEBRIS/TRASH/GARBAGE

All exterior property areas and premises within the Town limits need to be maintained in a clean, safe condition free from the accumulation of debris, trash, and/or garbage. All trash needs to be secured in a plastic bag, and the plastic bag needs to be placed inside of a leak-proof trash container with a tight-fitting lid.

PARKING OF RECREATIONAL VEHICLES, WATERCRAFT, PERSONAL UTILITY TRAILERS, AND RECREATIONAL EQUIPMENT TRAILERS IN RESIDENTIAL DISTRICTS

In a residential district, recreational vehicles, watercraft, personal utility trailers and recreational equipment trailers need to be parked behind the front line of the main building on the lot (usually a house), and needs to be parked at least five (5) feet off of the side property line. In the case of a corner lot, they must be parked to the rear of the house.

PARKING OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLES IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS

The parking of commercial vehicles in residential areas is prohibited. These provisions do not apply to a property within the R-B residential business district if the property is used for commercial purposes. These provisions will apply to home occupations.

INOPERABLE/JUNK VEHICLES
  • Inoperable vehicles/trucks/trailers fall into at least one of the following categories:
    • A vehicle which is not in operating condition;
    • A vehicle, which for a period of 60 days or longer has been partially or totally disassembled by the removal of tires and wheels, the engine or other essential parts required for operation of the vehicle; or
    • A vehicle on which there are displayed neither valid license plates nor a valid inspection decal.
  • Inoperable vehicles are subject to enforcement by the Town of Vinton. The owner of such a vehicle can remedy the problem by doing one or all of the following:
    • Completely screening the vehicle from public view in a fully enclosed building or structure or by the use of hedges or approved fencing. NOTE: A car cover is not considered to be adequate screening.
    • Restoring the vehicle to an operable condition including valid license plates and valid inspection sticker.
    • Removing the vehicle from the premises.

WEEDS/TALL GRASS

All properties where the grass/weeds/foreign growth has reached a height of at least twelve (12) inches is in violation of the Vinton Town Code. This does not apply to areas that are naturally forested or to property located in an industrial district that is allowed to grow for hay.
