The Town of Vinton has a comprehensive
ordinance governing the planning and zoning activities throughout
the corporate limits. This Department reviews and approves all
documents related to development of lands within the Town. Anyone
constructing, demolishing, adding, or otherwise structurally altering
any building must first obtain appropriate permits from the Vinton
Planning and Zoning Department, located at 311 S. Pollard Street
in Downtown Vinton. Roanoke
County building inspectors will review all construction work
to make sure it complies with applicable building codes.
The Planning and Zoning Department processes petitions for variances,
rezonings, special uses, and street or alley closures. Variances
from the zoning ordinance must be approved by the Board
of Zoning Appeals. Changes in zoning and requests for special
use permits must be approved by the Town
Council, after recommendation by the Planning
Commission. The Planning
Commission and Board
of Zoning Appeals hold public hearings and/or work sessions
on an as-needed basis, with notice of such meetings appearing
prior to the meeting in The Vinton Messenger and on Government
Access Cable Channel 3.
The Planning and Zoning Department also oversees the stormwater
management program and Virginia Pollutant Discharge Elimination
System (VPDES) permitting by the State of Virginia for the Town
of Vinton. Please click
here to visit the stormwater management program and the VPDES
permit informational web page.
The Planning and Zoning Department is responsible for zoning enforcement
related to such items as weeds, litter, inoperative vehicles,
and commercial vehicles in residential areas. After investigation
by this Department, the owner of the property is notified by mail
to clean up the yard and/or to remove the inoperative or commercial
vehicles within a specified time limit. For

Zoning Enforcement Page.
